WHAT IS POWERLIFTING

"Powerlifitng, Isnt that what they do at the Olympics? Clean and jerk? 

 

I have heard this statement time and time again as people literally do not know what the sport of powerlifting entails. 

 

Lets set the record straight!

 

Powerlifting is a sport that is comprised of 3 lifts.

 

Bench, Squat and Deadlift.

 

The goal is to lift as much weight as possible on these 3 lifts by any meals allowed within the competition.

 

Competition

You have 3 attempts to lift your heaviest weight. 

You must do this with proper form and proper range of motion otherwise the lift will not count. 

The lifters heaviest weight lifted results in the total for that lift. 

After completing all 3 lifts you get what is called a Total which is basically all the poundage lifted to give you your score. 

 

The highest total wins the competition. 

 

Of course this is just the gist of things. There are weight classes, different federations, different regulations and various other rules and judging criteria depending on the competition itself. 

 

But guess what. 

 

No snatch. No clean and jerk. 

 

Just Bench, Squat and Deadlift.
